Spiek – Frontend Development – Progressive Web App
Cheats:
Smart training for busy teachers
Further and refresher training in primary education is under pressure. Teachers hardly find time for study days, and arranging replacements is difficult. That is why Uitgeverij Zwijsen, together with a team of specialists, developed the digital learning platform Spiek: a microlearning app that allows teachers to further train themselves, wherever and whenever it suits them. My Tech Partner was responsible for the technical realization.
In brief:
what did we do?

- Frontend development integrated with Moodle
- Delivery as Progressive Web App (PWA) and web version
- Instructional videos for explanation and onboarding
- Responsive design for mobile, tablet and desktop
- Training for management and use
The challenge:
further training must be practical and feasible
Interviews with teachers showed that traditional training does not fit in well with their busy practice. Sessions are often long and complex, and it is difficult to be away from the classroom for a whole day. Moreover, the teacher shortage leads to additional barriers: colleagues have to take over work or a substitute has to come.
The solution? Short, concrete and accessible learning. Spiek had to become a platform that you can just grab: on the couch, in the teacher's lounge, or between two lessons. This required a smart and scalable digital infrastructure.

The concept:
Cheat in 12 minutes (or less)
You can easily use Spiek via your web browser on laptop, tablet or mobile. Modules are interactive, up-to-date (such as the PISA study), and directly applicable in the classroom.
"If you are struggling with something, for example certain behavior in class, you can quickly follow a module. They are nice, short modules with a summary of important points." - Ms Maike Teacher & Blogger

From concept to platform
1. Discover
get a clear picture of the need
In the first phase, the focus was on understanding the target group. Zwijsen conducted 1-on-1 interviews with primary school teachers to gain insight into their challenges around further and additional training. These conversations showed that there was a need for an accessible, flexible learning platform with short modules that tie in with daily practice.
Based on these insights, a click model was developed in a design sprint. The first user reactions were positive: the concept fitted in well with the needs of teachers and deserved further development.
2. Evidence
testing the idea with real users
A working prototype was built in WordPress and tested with a wider group of teachers. The central questions: do they quickly find what they are looking for? Do they understand what Spiek offers? Does the flow work logically?
The feedback was incorporated into an improved prototype that was tested by 200 teachers. Their input made it clear which elements were essential for a successful launch. The platform was finally given the green light for further development.
3. Build
from proof-of-concept to scalable platform
In this phase, My Tech Partner came fully into the picture. We realized both the official Spiek website in WordPress and the complete frontend of the learning environment.
- The marketing website was built using Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) and delivered in a flexible WordPress framework, allowing Zwijsen's content team to get started without the intervention of developers.
- In multiple frontend sprints we developed the learning environment, from the dashboard and module overviews to the progress pages, linked to Moodle.
We delivered Spiek as a fully responsive platform and as a Progressive Web App, so teachers can learn anywhere and anytime. We also created onboarding videos to quickly familiarize new users.
Thanks to this approach, Spiek quickly grew from a concept to a mature learning solution with thousands of users.
Result: growth from 0 to thousands of users
After the launch, Spiek grew in one year to a platform with more than 5000 users. Every week new modules were added and the platform was further enriched with functionality.
A complete sales and marketing team was set up. Spiek has since grown and been taken over by a market party.
